Our Story

Humankind International change lives. It was started by three Somalian refugees who had their lives changed by others and wanted to make a difference in Dadaab Refugee Camp in Kenya.

From humble beginnings in a truly Canadian place: Tim Hortons. After catching up, Muuxi told Abdi and Abdirizak something that had been on his mind for a while.

He was visiting his mom in Ethiopia and the children playing in the streets were so bored. Was there a solution? It seemed like there was something he and the two others could do to help improve these kids’ lives and give them a chance at a better future.

Muuxi has been known to speak widely, and often, about the difference education can make in anyone’s lives.

That belief, mixed with a need to provide a solution to the boredom facing the children, well,

That’s how Humankind was born.

Humankind International was incorporated in April 2008 as a non-profit organization under the bigger organization, Accountable Development Works, by a group of African-born Canadians and their Canadian friends. They felt they have the moral responsibility to respond to the humanitarian and development needs of communities in the Southern part of war-torn Somalia and the marginalized communities of Northern Kenya.

Humankind International is now (as of late 2019) a CRA registered non-profit humanitarian organization. It is committed to listening to and responding to the needs of the communities of Northern Kenya and Southern Somalia. The organization strives to use new approaches to developing and empowering these communities to achieve their goals.
